Clinical Psychologist in Midtown Manhattan

Clinical psychology from someone who understands both worlds

Meet Dr. Peter W. Lobl, JD, PhD

I’m a clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience treating adults and couples for anxiety, depression, stress, self‑esteem challenges, life transitions, and relationship issues. Before becoming a psychologist, I practiced law in high‑stakes litigation, so I understand firsthand the pressures faced by lawyers and other high‑performing professionals. My approach is evidence‑based, personalized, and focused on helping you make meaningful, lasting change.
I offer evidence‑based psychological services focused on mental health, wellbeing, and personal development. My work is grounded in research‑supported approaches tailored to each person’s needs. With dual training as a clinical psychologist and a lawyer, I bring a unique perspective to clients who live and work in demanding professional environments.
I work with adults and couples seeking help with anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, self‑esteem concerns, life transitions, and relationship difficulties. I have particular expertise in supporting lawyers and other professionals navigating long hours, high expectations, and questions about meaning, identity, and career.

I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University and a JD from Duke University School of Law. My clinical training includes advanced work at Mount Sinai / Icahn School of Medicine and the Addiction Institute of New York. I am licensed as a psychologist in New York (License #017265), registered for telehealth in Florida (Telehealth Registration PSY.TL 445), and credentialed as a healthcare provider (NPI 1346310595). My practice draws on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and psychodynamic therapy.

In our work together, we will define clear goals, use evidence‑based strategies, and regularly review progress so therapy feels active and collaborative. Clients often choose me because I combine rigorous clinical training with an insider’s understanding of the legal and professional worlds, offer a confidential and non‑judgmental space, and provide flexible options for in‑person sessions in Midtown Manhattan or secure telehealth for residents of New York and Florida.

Specialized Care for the Legal Profession

Confidential, evidence‑based therapy for attorneys and professionals facing burnout, anxiety, depression, and relationship strain.

As a clinical psychologist and former BigLaw attorney, I understand billable‑hour pressure, partner expectations, and the fear that seeking help could affect your reputation or bar admission.

Questions we often asked

I work with adults and couples on anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, self‑esteem concerns, relationship problems, life transitions, and the unique pressures faced by lawyers and other high‑performing professionals.

Yes. I see clients in person in my Midtown Manhattan office, just steps from Grand Central, and I offer secure telehealth sessions for residents of New York and Florida.
My current fee is $325 per 45‑minute individual session and $375 per 45‑minute couples session. I’ll review fees and scheduling in detail during our initial consultation so you know exactly what to expect.
I am a fee‑for‑service, out‑of‑network provider and do not participate in insurance panels. Many clients receive partial reimbursement (upto 80%) from their insurance; I provide the documentation or electronic claims needed so you can use any out‑of‑network benefits you may have.
In our first session, I’ll ask about your concerns, your history, and your goals for therapy. We’ll discuss whether individual, couples, or another approach is the best fit and outline a plan tailored to your needs.
Length of treatment varies. Some people work with me for a few months around a specific issue; others choose longer‑term therapy to address deeper patterns and ongoing personal growth. We’ll decide together what makes sense for you.
Yes. Our work is confidential and protected by law, with a few specific safety‑related exceptions that I explain clearly at the outset. I follow HIPAA, professional ethics guidelines, and all applicable state regulations to safeguard your privacy.
